There are different techniques that you can use to multiply.
They include mental strategies and written strategies.
Mental Strategies
METHOD 1
Calculate 54 × 8:
Split the larger number into tens and units: 50 and 4
Multiply each part by 8 and add the answers together:
50×8 = 400 4×8 = 32 so:
54×8 = 400+32 = 432
METHOD 2
Calculate 89 × 7:
Round the first number to the nearest tens and multiply:
90× 7 = 630
We added 1 to 89 (we added 7 times!) so now we have to take it away:
630 – 7 = 623
Therefore 89 × 7 = 623
METHOD 3
Calculate 83 × 10:
When we multiply a whole number by 10 we add a zero. If we multiply by 100 we add 2 zeros, for 1000 we add 3 zeros etc.
83 × 10 = 830
METHOD 4
Calculate 8.32 × 10:
When we multiply a decimal number by 10 we move the decimal point one space to the right. If we multiply by 100 we move 2 spaces, for 1000 we move 3 spaces etc.
8.32 × 10 = 83.2
METHOD 5
Calculate 23 × 30:
30 = 3 × 10 so we can split the calculation:
23 × 30 = 23 × 3 × 10 = 69 × 10 = 690
