Broad General Education – Mathematics and Numeracy
The broad general education phase of CfE (Curriculum for Excellence) is from S1 to S3. It is closely connected to the senior phase and provides a strong foundation in Mathematics and Numeracy for choosing and specialising in a range of subjects at appropriate levels in the senior phase (s4/5/6) at an appropriate level.
At Dingwall Academy the Mathematics courses are studied three levels to meet the varying needs of the pupils. Our courses are designed using the CfE experiences and outcomes and any additional prerequisites we consider to be essential. The table below shows an overview of the three courses and illustrates the progression from S1 to S3 and into the senior phase National courses.
Course | S1 | S2 | S3 |
Lower ability | Level 1/2 | Level 2 | Level 2/3 |
Middle ability | Level 2/3 | S2 Level 3 | S3 Level 3 into N4 |
Upper ability | Level 3 | Level 3/4 | Level 4 into N5 |
We continually assess pupil’s learning and skills within class, and pupils are given the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding and skills in a more formal end of term assessments in October, December March and May. We are then able to move between levels according to their needs at two points during the year. Any changes to classes are usually made in January and May.
